Rotation is about one thing — wait time fairness . Everybody drove out to play. The organizer's job is to make sure court time is distributed as evenly as possible, without breaking the flow of the session.
Winners-split (recommended). After every game, all four players go back to the waiting list. Fair, boring in the best way, and the default for organized open play.
Winners-stay ("king of the court"). Winners hold court and challengers rotate on. Fun for small casual groups. Punishing when one pair is much stronger than the rest — they can stay on for an hour while others watch.
A paddle rack works up to about a dozen regulars. Beyond that, three problems show up:
A waiting list sorted by time off court , with a deterministic tiebreaker (Pickle IQ uses a stable secondary sort on player ID), makes those problems impossible.
The next foursome should also make a competitive game. Pull the four longest-waiting players, then pair them so the two combined skill ratings are as close as possible. A 3.5 + 2.5 vs a 3.0 + 3.0 is close; a 4.0 + 3.5 vs a 2.5 + 2.5 is not.
