Standard knockout. Lose once, go home. Fastest format — log₂(N) rounds and you are done. Great for time-boxed events, brutal for players who travelled.
Use when: half-day event, small trophy pool, everyone lives locally. Skip when: players drove more than an hour to be there.
Two brackets running in parallel — winners and losers. First loss drops you into the losers\' bracket. Second loss and you are out. The losers\' bracket champion plays the winners\' bracket champion in the final, and (in a "true" double elim) has to beat them twice.
Use when: the field is competitive and one bad seed shouldn\'t end anyone\'s day. Standard for sanctioned USA Pickleball events. Downside: takes ~1.7× as long as single elim.
A side bracket for first-round losers. It runs alongside the main bracket, gives eliminated players at least 2–3 total games, and usually awards a "consolation" prize. Very common at recreational and club tournaments. Cheap to add — you already have the courts and the players are already there.
Split the field into pools of 4–6 teams. Each pool runs a round robin. Top 1–2 seeds from each pool advance into a single or double elimination bracket. This is the fairest format for medium and large fields because early seeding mistakes get corrected before the elimination stage.
