A ladder is the simplest way to keep games competitive over a whole season: players hold a numbered rung, play opponents near their own level, and move up or down on results. This guide covers the rules, the three scoring systems organizers actually use, and how to set one up from scratch.
The games themselves follow normal pickleball rules. The ladder only adds rules about pairing and movement. A workable rule set is:
The winner takes the loser's rung; the loser drops one. Dead simple and very readable, but a single bad night can cost a player several places, and it punishes anyone who plays often.
Best for: small, tight, competitive groups of 8–16 who arrange their own matches.
Award 3 points for a win, 1 for playing. Sort the ladder by total points, then by win rate. Rewards showing up, so casual players stay engaged, and one heavy loss never wrecks a season.
Best for: club nights, drop-in groups, and any ladder above ~20 players.
