Pickleball scoring confuses almost every new player — three numbers, side-outs, and a weird first serve. Here is the whole system in one page, with the exact call you make before every serve.
Only the serving team scores. Games go to 11, win by 2. Before every doubles serve, call three numbers: your score, their score, and which server you are (1 or 2).
Example: "5-3-2" means the serving team has 5, the receivers have 3, and this is the second server. If they fault again, it is a side-out.
To keep the game fair, the very first serving team of the match only gets one server . That is why the opening call is "0-0-2" — the second number is fictitious, and losing the rally sends the ball straight to the opponents. From that point on, both partners on the serving team get to serve before a side-out.
Singles is simpler — you only call two numbers (server score, receiver score) because there is no partner. Serve from the right/even court when your score is even, and from the left/odd court when it is odd.
In rally scoring, a point is awarded on every rally regardless of who served. Games are usually to 15 or 21. USA Pickleball has trialled it for select events and some leagues have adopted it, but the majority of open play and rec sessions still use traditional side-out scoring described above.
