Doubles is 80% of pickleball. These are the patterns that separate 3.5s from 4.0s — mostly positioning and shot selection, not power.
The team at the non-volley zone line wins the vast majority of points. After you serve, you stay back for one ball (the return must bounce). After you return, you charge. The third shot exists to buy time to advance.
The middle causes hesitation — "yours or mine?" — and takes away angles. On any ball you're not sure where to place, hit the middle seam between opponents.
Not rude — fundamental. Direct 70%+ of your shots at the opponent who moves less, has a weaker backhand, or is newer. Vary just enough to keep the stronger player honest.
A soft arc that lands in the kitchen lets your team advance safely. Drives feel great but leave you stuck at the baseline. Drill the drop; use the drive only when you get a high, short return.
When opponents are banging from the kitchen and you're mid-court, don't counter-drive. Bend your knees, absorb, and drop the ball into their kitchen. Neutral beats losing.
